WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT

Every new patient fills out our new patient packet forms and questionnaire.

ICT Eye is primarily referral based. You can expect to receive our patient intake forms before your intial appointment.

You can download the patient intake forms here.

A 2 to 3 hour exam is conducted and in- office testing is provided.

After the exam and testing we will schedule your procedure or surgery on a separate visit. Please be aware - we may dilate your eyes as part of the exam.

Your follow up procedure or surgery is then scheduled with details to follow.

After your exam we will send you home with your “slip on” dark glasses and you will have a plan in place for your next procedure or surgery to follow.

CATARACT SURGERY

Our skilled surgeons employ advanced techniques and premium intraocular lens implants to safely and effectively remove cataracts, restoring your vision to its full potential.

WHAT IS A CATARACT?

A cataract is a clouding of the outer “lens” of the eye that reduces incoming light and blurs vision. Advancing age is usually the reason why they develop, but cataracts can also be brought on by diseases such as diabetes, negative habits such as smoking or excessive drinking, or prolonged exposure to bright lights. Cataracts are quite common, and some 25 million Americans have them.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A CATARACT?

Cloudy, blurry vision; a loss of detail in shapes and colors.

A “halo” effect around bright lights, such as traffic and street lights.

Discomfort in brightly-lit environments

Poor night vision, especially while driving

A yellow-colored cast over your vision

HOW DOES CATARACT SURGERY WORK?

Cataract surgery is so popular and well-tested that the procedure typically takes only minutes to perform. While ophthalmologists can use a variety of tools and techniques, including lasers, the most popular cataract procedures use high-frequency ultrasound to break the cloudy lens into small pieces. The doctor removes the old lens material using a suction tool. A new, clear lens is then positioned onto the eye. Recovery time is generally minimal.

CATARACT SURGERY FAQ’S

Although Cataract surgery is common - we find the below information to be useful when deciding if it is the right surgery for you.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

  • A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye, which leads to a decrease in vision. It is commonly related to aging but can also result from injury, certain diseases, or genetic conditions.

  • Common symptoms include blurry vision, faded colors, glare or halos around lights, difficulty seeing at night, double vision in one eye, and frequent changes in prescription glasses.

  • While cataracts cannot always be prevented, some measures can reduce the risk. These include wearing sunglasses to block UV rays, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake, managing health conditions like diabetes, and having regular eye examinations.

  • In the early stages, changing your eyeglass prescription may help improve vision. When cataracts interfere with daily activities, surgery is the most effective treatment. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.

  • Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest surgeries performed. Most people experience improved vision afterward. However, as with any surgery, there are risks such as infection, bleeding, and retinal detachment, though these are rare.

POST-SURGERY QUESTIONS

  • Recovery time can vary, but most people return to their normal activities within a few days. Complete healing usually takes about 4-6 weeks. It’s important to follow your doctor's post-surgery instructions to ensure proper healing.

  • Many people have improved vision and may not need glasses for distance vision after surgery. However, reading glasses or bifocals might still be necessary for close-up tasks.

  • Cataracts cannot come back once the lens is removed. However, a condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) can occur, causing vision to become cloudy again. This can be treated with a quick, painless laser procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy.

  • Yes, there are several types of IOLs including monofocal lenses (for one distance, either distance or near), multifocal lenses (for both near and far vision), and toric lenses (for correcting astigmatism).

  • Dryness of the eyes can make wearing contacts difficult and make driving at night dangerous. Aging, trauma, environmental factors, and medical conditions can cause dryness in the eyes. Thus, you should consider having ilux dry eye treatment.

  • The meibomian glands lubricate the eyes with numerous glands that produce oils on the upper and lower eyelids. MGD is an abnormality that causes the glands to produce insufficient oils, allowing tears to evaporate quickly and drying the eyes out. The symptoms of MGD are often similar to other dryness issues, MGD patients may also exhibit inflammation of the glands and thick mucus secreting from the glands. MGD produces a significant number of eye dryness conditions that must be treated by a qualified professional like Dr. Burgoyne.

WHAT IS iLUX?

iLux® is a device developed by Tear Film Innovations and cleared by the FDA for the treatment of MGD without surgery. The device is handheld and used by a professional to apply the right amount of heat and compression to treat MGD quickly and effectively. Light energy from the device is used to soften blockages in the meibomian glands while it applies heat and compression. Dr. Burgoyne has a range of control over the treatment area and has access to temperature monitoring to ensure the patient’s comfort and safety. There were a handful of positive ilux dry eye treatment reviews from the other patients.
